Leadership
The days of a shop run by a single individual are now behind us. Invariably, managers in retail will be leading a team. Even where there is a single person in-store, it still takes a team of individuals to ensure that the store is adequately and appropriately stocked. Being able to work with many varied people, and also lead them in the direction you want, is therefore essential. For many retailers, this ability to work as part of a team, is at the top of their criteria for hiring new staff.
Hard work.
Most retailers trade with the public between 9 and 5. However, they operate 24 hours a day to ensure that the right goods are in the right stores at the right times. Staffing will need to be scheduled. Managers also have the unenviable task of dealing with irate customers. When you are on the shop floor, you might have to spend hours on your feet. Every day.
